Show Me Proof of All Those Motions
#198: Show any experiment proving Earth spins at 1,000 mph, tilts 23.5°, orbits at 67,000 mph, spirals 500,000 mph in the galaxy, and flies away from the Big Bang at 670,000,000 mph.
The Meme
Wavy blue trajectory diagram over stars above a long challenge paragraph stacking multiple speed claims.
Why It Spreads
The meme stacks five enormous speeds in one breath, from 1,000 mph surface spin to 670,000,000 mph cosmic recession, and pairs them with a chaotic wavy trajectory graphic. That makes the globe story sound like invented spaghetti motion and invites the challenge to show one experiment proving all of it at once.
What It Gets Wrong
The wavy trajectory diagram stacks 1,000 mph spin, 23.5° tilt, 67,000 mph orbit, 500,000 mph galactic motion, and 670,000,000 mph cosmic recession as if one headline speed cancels another. Each figure lives in a different reference frame: equatorial rotation is ~1670 km/h at angular rate 360°/24 h = 15°/h, heliocentric orbit is ~30 km/s at ~150 million km radius, and redshift recession is not a desk flying through space. Centripetal acceleration a = v²/r ≈ (464 m/s)² / 6.371×10⁶ m ≈ 0.034 m/s² from spin stays far below carnival-ride jerk, which is why Foucault pendulums detect rotation without your chair sliding. TestTheGlobe's We Do Not Feel Earth Moving and TestTheGlobe's Earth Rotation Speed walk through the observations and predictions this image skips.
The Debunk
The meme stacks unrelated reference-frame speeds (1,000 mph spin, 23.5° tilt, 67,000 mph heliocentric orbit, 500,000 mph galactic motion, 670,000,000 mph cosmic recession) as if one number cancels another. Each figure has its own measurement: equatorial spin is ~1670 km/h (~1,000 mph) at angular rate 360°/24 h = 15°/h, orbital speed around the Sun is ~30 km/s (~67,000 mph) at ~150 million km radius, and the 23.5° obliquity is axial tilt, not a velocity.
- Uniform spin at ~1670 km/h gives centripetal acceleration a = v²/r ≈ (464 m/s)² / 6.371×10⁶ m ≈ 0.034 m/s², far below what you feel on a carnival ride; TestTheGlobe's We Do Not Feel Earth Moving separates steady rotation from jerk.
- TestTheGlobe's Earth Rotation Speed breaks down linear mph versus angular rate so the meme's 1,000 mph figure can be checked against the 15°/h Earth rate instruments measure.
- Heliocentric ~67,000 mph and galactic ~500,000 mph are speeds relative to different frames; mixing them with 670,000,000 mph Big Bang recession does not invalidate Foucault precession or ring-laser gyro readings.
- TestTheGlobe's Day and Night models how a 23.5°-tilted rotating sphere produces seasons and time zones without requiring you to feel orbital velocity.
